Description

Located at 5001 Grant Avenue, Philadelphia, Glen Foerd on the Delaware is a Philadelphia estate set amid eighteen acres of rare trees and flowering shrubs. The grounds include a community garden, formal rose garden, heritage grape vine, and riverfront oaks that date back over 300 years. Many of Philadelphia’s first families built their country estates on the banks of the Delaware River. They came by ferry, carriage, and later train, to escape the heat of summers in the city. It was at these grand estates they entertained some of the most prominent figures in the history of our nation. Glen Foerd is the only Delaware River estate located in Philadelphia, which is open to the public. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

This collection is comprised of images courtesy of Glen Foerd and interviews conducted by Joseph Makuc with community gardeners Pam Henshall, Mike Sutton and Dan Coonan.
