Description

This collection is comprised of archival materials held by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's McLean Library and traces early efforts to green the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood. The collection includes an interview by Joseph Makuc with gardener, Marquita Heard, that focuses on the historic "Mrs. Woody's Community Garden."

The Strawberry Mansion neighborhood was dedicated as a "Greene Country Towne" in 1990. To qualify for Greene Countrie Towne status, residents of this 200-square-block North Philadelphia neighborhood completed 170 greening projects, installing gardens, street trees, and containers filled with flowers.
