This collection is comprised of archival materials held by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s McLean Library documenting the history of Philadelphia Community Gardens.

The collection contains early community gardens and gardeners of Point Breeze, Strawberry Mansion, Susquehanna, West Shore, and Francisville neighborhoods. Included in the collection are images of the earlier Penn State Extension demonstration gardens. In addition, the collection contains images of neighborhood gardens no longer extant.

The collection also includes interviews conducted by Joseph Makuc with Cynthia Kischinchand (Tree Tenders), Mindy Maslin (Tree Tenders), Ellen Wheeler (PHS staff), Anne Vallery (PHS staff) and Paul Tickle (Philadelphia Flower Show volunteer).
