"The Norris Square Neighborhood Project garden spaces have served every purpose imaginable. They have offered solace through cultivating food, herbs, and flowers; provided our community with Latinx culturally-significant green spaces; hosted theater and music performances; taught young people the importance of connecting with the Earth; brought neighborhoods together; and invoked passions in hearts of community members from all walks of life.

The ½ acre of urban gardens were created between 1980 and 2006 by the women of Grupo Motivos led by co-founders Iris Brown and Tomasita Romero, and community residents. Each of the six gardens represents and embodies the diversity of the Puerto Rican culture and West African diasporas in Philadelphia." -- Norris Square Neighborhood Project website

This collection is comprised of archival materials found in the collections of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's McLean Library and recent oral histories conducted by Joseph Makuc with Iris Brown, Eileen Gallagher, Wanda Romero, Teresa Elliot, John Byrnes, Sylvia Metzler, and Peter Grove.
