Description

"A cornerstone of West Powelton, the Wiota Street Garden has been providing fresh produce and green space to the community since 1984. The garden sits on a quarter-acre plot at the corner of Wiota Street and Powelton Avenue in the West Powelton neighborhood of Philadelphia.

Founded in 1984 by local real estate developer John Lindsay, the garden is a vital asset to this section of West Philadelphia. Each Sunday from Memorial Day through the end of September, the garden’s weekly farm stand provides neighbors with a source for handpicked vegetables at affordable prices in one of the city’s most barren food deserts.

The Wiota Street Garden has, in recent years, also developed strong relationships with a number of food banks in the neighborhood. Throughout the summer and fall, the Wiota Street Garden staff makes weekly donations to both the Red Cross House located at 40th and Powelton Ave and the Food Pantry, which runs out of the Episcopal Cathedral in West Philadelphia." -- Wiota Street Community Garden Facebook page
