Description

Interview with Guina Hammond, founding gardener at Chester Avenue Community Garden, Program Manager at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS), and community storyteller. Hammond discusses her upbringing in West Philadelphia, her journey learning to garden with the Chester Avenue Community Garden, and the development of the garden over the years. The interview also includes a tour of the garden and a discussion of Hammond's work with PHS, including the Philadelphia Water Department-funded Rain Check stormwater management program and tours of the PECO Green Roof.

The interview includes a discussion of Hammond's presentation on the Mantua Peace Garden, "Community Gardens as Agents for Change and Civic Engagement," at the 2016 Longwood Graduate Symposium. Additionally, the interview discusses the history of Black gardeners and horticulturists. The interview concludes with Hammond's reflections on the future of community gardening in Philadelphia.
